“It is still “too early to tell” whether the federal government can meet its green hydrogen production targets, Energy and Climate Change Department officials maintain, despite Australia needing to increase output more than 450-fold from current levels.
Released in 2024 by Energy Minister Chris Bowen, the National Hydrogen Strategy set out the government’s ambition to boost production of renewable-generated hydrogen at a competitive cost, setting a target of 500,000 tonnes by 2030.
But during Senate estimates on Tuesday, federal bureaucrats confirmed that domestic production levels were currently 1100 tonnes – amounting to 0.2 per cent of the target – prompting Liberal senator Sarah Henderson to ask whether the goal remained achievable.”
